WebSphere is IBM’s suite of products designed to set up, operate and integrate e-business applications across multiple computing platforms using Web technologies.
WebSphere includes both the run-time components - like WebSphere Application Server (WAS) - and the tools to develop applications that will run on WAS. IBM WebSphere - Technology OverviewWeb portals allow partners, employees and customers to chose their user experience, with personalized applications based on role, context, actions, location, preferences and team collaboration needs. IBM WebSphere Portal software provides a composite application or business mashup framework and the advanced tooling needed to build flexible, SOA-based solutions, as well as the unmatched scalability required by any size organization.
The suite includes WebSphere Portal Server, WebSphere Portal Enable and WebSphere Portal Extend. WebSphere Portal Server is the software with core portal services that aggregate applications and content as role-based applications. WebSphere Portal Enable adds content and document management, and workflow functions. WebSphere Portal Extend adds powerful collaborative and electronic forms features.
Additional products include WebSphere Portal Express (a trimmed down version for small and mid-size businesses) and WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable (extending WebSphere Portal to a wide range of mobile devices).
