Alchemy lead the relaunch of Intranet & Collaboration Services in London Underground :: Alchemy are to lead the creation of a new Intranet (in RedDot CMS) and a new Document Management solution (in SharePoint 2007) for London Underground. The tube (as it is affectioinately known by Londoners) is the oldest – and second largest – metro system in the world; with 270 stations and over 400km of track. It carries over 28 million passengers a year and employs over 22,000 people.
London Undergound is more than an organisation; it is an institution... and it has one of the most recognised and imitated brands in the world. What a great challenge, then, to refresh a previously award-winning intranet in a clean and exciting new look & feel (deserving of an iconic brand).
Whilst successful, the LU Intranet has become somewhat unweildly, with more pages on the site than people in the organisation! The challenge for users is "finding the wood for the trees". On this occasion, less really is more... and we will be working with over 150 content editors across the organisation to simplify down the content and make it more accessible.
At the same time, we will be creating a new Collaboration and Document Management solution in Microsoft SharePoint 2007, as a sister site to the new Intranet. LU will build on and enhance this platform over time.
Says David Viney, MD of Alchemy, "This is an exciting project for us, and our first in the Public Sector. We will be looking to set a new standard for usability and findability, whilst also creating a site as beautiful and simple as the LU brand itself”. About London Undergound:The London Underground (also known as The Tube or The Underground) is a rapid transit system serving a large part of Greater London and some parts of Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex in England. It is the oldest underground railway in the world, the first section of which opened in 1863. In 1890 it became the first to operate electric trains. Known affectionately by Londoners as "the Tube", the Underground serves 270 stations and has 402 kilometres (250 mi) of track, making it the second largest metro system in the world in terms of route miles, after the Shanghai Metro. In 2007, more than one billion passenger journeys were recorded, making it the third busiest metro system in Europe, after Moscow and Paris. The tube is an international icon for London, with the tube map, considered a design classic, having influenced many other transport maps worldwide. The organisation employs over 22,000 people.
