Alchemy help launch the new Cancer Research Collaboration Site :: Alchemy have project managed the launch of a new Collaboration site (built in SharePoint 2010) for Cancer Research UK, the largest independent cancer research charity in the world. The site will serve 3,000 employees from across the fundraising, scientific research and cancer information & public policy directorates. The work pioneered the creation of team sites, meeting spaces, document repositories and project rooms.
Cancer Research is the world's largest independent cancer research charity and one of the top three largest charities in the UK. It undertakes research into possible new cancer treatments, using it's own scientists and through grant-funding teams at universities and hospitals. It also provides information about cancer and runs campaigns aimed at raising awareness of the disease and influencing public policy.
Cancer Research UK's work is entirely funded by the public. It raises money through donations, legacies, community fundraising, events, retail and corporate partnerships. Over 40,000 people are regular volunteers. Notable past successes include the development of tamoxifen and herceptin (saving thousands of women from breast cancer), temozolomide (for treating brain tumours) and carboplatin, one of the most effective chemotherapy drugs ever!
There are over 3,000 employees with access to SharePoint in CRUK and a much larger potential user base amongst Research Partners and (in time) volunteers. The work involved the creation of four MOSS2010 environments (for development, test, UAT and production) and four collaboration templates (project, team, meeting and document spaces). Delivered in partnership with Zensar (using the Agile/SCRUM development methodology), the templates were pioneered in 12 teams across the charity. The final stage of the project was to define a "standard service", and communicate the site and service more broadly to the charity.
Says Mike Chapman, Head of Collaboration Services, “David came in at a critical time during our SharePoint Collaboration implementation project. He has great experience in the internal collaboration/information field and is a very effective communicator who is particularly effective in engaging with a senior management audience. We have benefited from David's knowledge of the SharePoint software and his view on how it can be implemented in a complex organisation.”
Says David Viney, “the KPI Portal is all about bringing together people, in a spirit of celebration and collaboration. We were excited to be working on such challenging timescales with KPI colleagues from across the world”.
